APNU blames PPP/C’s attitude to national unity for financial predicament

Georgetown : A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) blames the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration for  the financial predicament facing Guyana as a result of being ‘blacklisted’ by the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) on May 29, 2014.

APNU today says the party has repeatedly called on the PPP/C to abandon its “winner-takes-all” attitude to governance. “The results of the 28th November 2011 general and regional elections should have made it clear that an ‘inclusionary’ approach was needed to promote the national interest. The current ‘dispensation’ in the National Assembly requires consultation and cooperation between the legislative and executive branches of Government instead of confrontation. Greater national unity will bring greater national benefits including:

The elimination of one-party domination of the Government;

The encouragement of dialogue within the formal councils of Government;

The enhancement of local, municipal and parliamentary democracy;

The enrichment of cultural life and national consciousness and pride.”

APNU calls on the major sections of society – including the Government; opposition parties; trade unions; private sector and civil society – to renew their quest for consensus on a broad national programme to move the country forward. Such a consensus could be a means of harnessing the talents of a broader constituency, fostering the conditions for social cooperation and economic development and deepening the democratic process.
