CARICOM Heads at the just concluded Guyanese 36th Heads of Government Conference in Barbados, called on the Hugh Wooding Law School (HWLS) to continue to make provisions for the automatic entry of the top 25 Guyanese University of Guyana (UG) law graduates at the HWLS pending the conclusion of another collaborative agreement between UG, University of West Indies (UWI) and Council of Legal Education (CLE).
In keeping with his commitment to urgently take up the matter with the UG administration, Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General (AG) Basil Williams recently convened a meeting in his chambers with Head of the Law Department Sheldon Mc Donald, former UG Registrar Vincent Alexander and President of the Bar Association Christopher Ram.
On being updated the AG immediately took the decision to contact the Guyana delegation at the CARICOM Heads of Government Conference headed by President David Granger and including Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Greenidge to amend the agenda and add the item of the automatic entry of the top 25 UG Law Graduates to the HWLS for 2015.
The AG further requested that the Foreign Minister seek an agreement with the CARICOM Heads to continue the interim arrangements made at their Intercessional Meeting in 2013 which was to allow the automatic entry of the top 25 UG Law graduates to the HWLS for 2014 pending the conclusion of another Collaborative Agreement between UG, UWI and the CLE and the completion of a study and submission of the report on the status of Legal Education in the CARICOM region.
Lauding the decision by the CARICOM Heads to continue with the interim agreement in allowing the automatic entry of the UG law graduates to the HWLS for 2015 the AG was also high in praise for the team effort of Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Greenidge.
The AG recognizes the need for a permanent solution to this sore problem and will consult with all relevant stakeholders.
