After 17-years, death row inmate sentence commuted to life

Georgetown: Condemn prisoner Hafiz Hussein sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and he was taken off the death row Wednesday afternoon.

The order was made and handed down by Chief Justice Ian Chang, after a motion was carried to the high court by a legal aid attorney.

The court noted such a prolonged period on the death row was considered inhumane and degrading punishment.

In September 1993, Hafeez Hussain,  Vivakanand Singh, Tola Persaud, Hasrat Hussain  were charged with murder, and in October 1994, they were committed to stand trial at the High Court. Two years later, on March 26, 1996, Hafeez Hussain and Singh were sentenced to death.

The two other accused, Hasrat Hussain and Persaud, were found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to two and three years’ imprisonment respectively.
