Test all for HIV says UWI Professor

Bridgetown.

Professor of Public Health,Epidemiology and HIV/AIDS at the University of the West Indies' Mona, Jamaica Campus, Dr Peter Figueroa has suggested that everyone admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital should be tested for HIV.

Speaking at a two day National HIV/AIDS Commission HIV Research Symposium 2012 at the Savannah Hotel yesterday, the veteran HIV/AIDS researcher suggested the formulation of a policy that would deal with the need to get sexually active people tested and, where necessary treated.

Figueroa said that all hospital admissions needed to be routinely tested, under a provider initiated HIV testing policy at the institution.

"If we recognize the importance of having a test, and Barbados has now eliminated mother to child transmission, certainly we can introduce HIV testing on a much wider basis", Figueroa argued.

He said that compulsory HIV testing was already set as a policy in Jamaica for the past eight years.
