High Court blocks appointment

Bridgetown

The High Court yesterday blocked the appointment of Allison Burke to the position of Crown Counsel in the Director of Public Prosecutions Office (DPP).

Burke's appointment was effective from September 1 but Acting Senior Crown Counsel in the DPP Office Ellwood Watts filled an injunction challenging the decision of the Judicial Services Commission and the Attorney General ratifying her appointment.

Watts, a police officer who has been on secondment to the DPP's Office for the past six years, complained that the position was never advertised as required by law as a result he never had the opportunty to secure the appointment.

The injunction was heard before Justice William Chandler and was adjourned until later this year.
