50-member team to represent Guyana at Carifesta X1

IMG_1021Georgetown : A new model, initiated by the Caribbean Community (Caricom), has been implemented and will result in each participating country in Carifesta X1 being limited to 50 persons.

Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony along with several officials, gave the media an update on preparations for the event which takes place in Suriname from August 16 to 26.

Minister Anthony said that under the new model, countries will also pay for transportation, food and accommodation. The traditional opening ceremony has been modified after being described as too long and somewhat ineffective. Minister Anthony said that after consultations with various Caricom member states, it was decided that each country will have a flag backdrop and a three – minute set piece or display which reflects what each country is best known for.

Auditions were conducted over the last two months and successful applicants, showcased their various talents and skills to the organising committee which consisted of a panel of experts from a wide cross section of areas, according to Minister Anthony.

The activities include opening and closing ceremonies, extended Grand Cultural Market and Trade Fair; performing arts in theatre, dance, music and storytelling; youth focus; community festivals; super concerts; film festival; capacity building workshops; meetings and networking events.

Guyanese participants will showcase their skills and various cultural pieces in Visual Arts, Literary Arts, Performing Arts, Culinary Arts, Caribbean Film, Fashion and a Youth Focus Category.

While the Government would not be able to pay for more than 50 persons, if there are other persons who would like to go as part of the delegation, and they are willing to pay their own expenses, then the Government is willing to consider bringing them on board, Dr. Anthony said.
The Eleventh Carifesta is being held under the theme “Culture for Development: Celebrating our diversity and promoting the central role of culture in economic, social and human development.”

Guyana will also be sending another 50- member group to participate in the Inter Guianas Festival which is being hosted in French Guiana from July 11 to 14. This group will depart on July 10.
