Today marks day 1 of what is being referred to as the “Hunger Games”. A group of young activists known as ‘Project 40’ are seeking to follow in the footsteps of Dr Wayne Kublalsingh who has been discharged from the St. Clair Medical after he fell unconscious on Sunday at Maracas Bay on his 26th day on his hunger strike.

The group of 40 strong have devised their own plan on how they will execute their hunger strike. It begins with one individual who will fast for 24 hours and then in a chain reaction when one day is completed, another person will begin their 24 hour cycle of starvation and this will continue for a period of 40 days.

Today they will be stationed at the Highway Re-Route Movement (HRM) camp opposite the OPM and will continue their regime from 9am today to 9am the following day.

In the absence of Kublalsingh at the hunger camp, the Project 40 group was accompanied by individuals like Roman Catholic priest Fr Clyde Harvey who joined the movement in prayer yesterday, as well as, poet and singer Muhammad Muwakil of Freetown who offered entertainment for the group during their protest last night.

Kublalsingh is expected to return to Gray Street, opposite the Office of the Prime Minister to continue his hunger strike tomorrow.
