2014 Pakaraima Mountain Safari in High Gear

Truck Safari’Georgetown: Participants of the 12th Pakaraima Mountain safari, are enjoying the ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’ in some of the most remote areas in Guyana, spanning hundreds of miles.

Undulating hills, deep gorges and dangerous mountain passes were expertly navigated over the last few days, taking the brave safarians closer and closer to their destination, Orinduik Falls.

This eight-day event, organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce in collaboration with Rain Forest Tours and with assistance from the Region eight and nine Administration ,  began in the wee hours of April12th, when the convoy of 26 vehicles departed the Guyoil Gas Station, on Regent Street.

Over the last few days, the team would have passed through several Amerindian villages on their 600 miles journey, including Karasabai, Tiperu, Rukumoto, Morabaiko, Monkey Mountain and Kato among others.

This annual journey plays a pertinent role in developing Guyana’s nature and adventure brand destination as it gives more recognition to the country’s potential in these aspects.

While the participants brave the elements and battle the rough terrain, opportunities also abound for interacting with the residents from the various communities along the way.

The 2014 Pakaraima Safari also attracted participation from Jamaica, Trinidad and Suriname and these fortunate few  are experiencing  Destination Guyana’s vast Hinterland  in its most pristine form.

The organizers and participants have all expressed gratitude to the sponsors, Guy Oil/Castrol, MMC, GT&T and Marketing and Distribution for making the event possible.

They also expressed anticipation at having the chance to experience the Rupununi Rodeo in Lethem, on which is the convoy’s final destination.

While the Ministry of Tourism sought to give more persons the ability to experience this ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’ and launched the ‘Truck Safari’ , not many persons expressed an interest, despite this, the Ministry remains hopeful that the lure of adventure, beauty and exploration will encourage more persons to sign up for Safari 2015.

The Drive Guyana Campaign was launched this year to allow for greater participation, both local and international, in mini adventures and Safaris across Guyana.

The first safari was held in March 2003 with a convoy of four Land Rovers and two tractors and trailers that journeyed from Karasabai in Region Nine to Orinduik Falls in Region Eight.

It was the brainchild of former Local Government and Regional Development Minister Harripersaud Nokta.
