2011 ends with record-high murder toll in St. Kitts-Nevis

St. Kitts-Nevis: According to a report in The St. Kitts Nevis Observer 2011 has ended with a record-high of 33 murders compared to 2010. Most of the murders were unofficially attributed to gang violence where the majority of victims were young men. With the exception of 3 murders, all were death by gun violence.

Based on the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force crime statics an alarming 55% increase in murders over the first three quarters of 2011 was recorded.

Commissioner of Police, CG Walwyn, told The St. Kitts Nevis Observer that improving the crime detection rate has been discussed at the highest level in the Police Force. The Police Chief said he is dissatisfied with the detection rate, especially in relation to murders and other major crimes and pledged that the security forces will continue their efforts in 2012 and relentlessly pursue criminals in their fight to retake the streets of St. Kitts and Nevis.
