10th Chinese Medical brigade has made its mark- Minister Ramsaran

ChineseGeorgetown: The Guyana – China strong relationship and the work of the tenth Chinese Medical Brigade were highlighted this evening at a farewell for the team and also a welcome ceremony hosted by the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and the Ministry of Health for the eleventh batch.

Speaking at the ceremony at the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre, Kingston, Minister of Health Dr. Bheri Ramsaran lauded the medical practitioners for their sterling contribution towards the health sector.

“Farewells are always a time to take stock, this brigade has made its mark as pointed out by the GPHC staff and has been an inspiration, and this is a hallmark of this team every year as they keep getting better each year and this is an indication of the relationship between Guyana and China.”

The Health Minister also pointed out that the collaboration between Guyana and China shows the progress which China continues to make.

He noted that over the years China and Guyana have continued to build stronger collaboration as the relationship reflects secure foundation of South/South cooperation.

“You have brought the new perspective on China.  China is making its mark in the Caribbean and you have been among the first in our region and ever since, your presence here is significant.”

The Minister however, called on the incoming team and those responsible for the activities of the team to look into the possibility of medical outreaches in far-flung communities.

Dr. Ramsaran noted that the Guyanese population has benefited significantly over the years from the Chinese team of expertise.

Further, he reiterated the Government’s commitment towards making the stints in Guyana more comfortable for the visiting doctors. He pointed to the fact that living quarters were constructed in Linden to properly accommodate the team that serve in that community.

 The Health Minister also thanked the team for the effort made in being able to procure much needed medical supplies during their stint.

Also on the occasion, Dr. Sheik Amir, Director of Medical and Professional Services, GPHC lauded the efforts of the team.

“This brigade has been one of the most well prepared batches in terms of punctuality and availability in terms of rendering their services; they have been involved in terms of getting donations of medical supplies.”

Dr. Amir noted that despite the challenges faced by the team, they all went beyond the call of duty to serve the Guyanese population. “I know their work was not without challenges however, they did rise to the challenge.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Yuying Lui, Charge D’ Affaires of the Chinese Embassy also noted that the team is more than deserving of the good words that are being uttered about their contribution.

“They are the only Chinese Medical team in South America, many of them were away from family and responsibilities back home, a land quite different from home, different language, not withstanding this, all the teams have the same determination to provide the Guyanese with the best medical services.”

He too pledged his Government’s continue support to the Guyanese people and to the incoming team.

Over the last two years the team of medical practitioners which included, gynaecologists, general surgeons, plastic surgeons, paediatricians, and pathologist among others were deployed at the GPHC and at the Linden Hospital Complex. About 150 medical experts have worked in Guyana since the first team came in 1993.
