Berbice : A Police Constable was driving a motor car along Crab Island Public Road, Berbice, with two men whom he had picked up at Ogle on the East Coast of Demerara last night.
One of the men requested that the vehicle stop in order for him to urinate, during which the other man who was in the rear seat, pulled out a knife and held up the policeman.
The Constable reacted and managed to discharge rounds from his service pistol which caused the man outside to run away. At the same time, the policeman accelerated the vehicle, but lost control and crashed into a concrete structure which left him unconcious.
The man who was still in the vehicle took away the rank’s service firearm and escaped into the nearby bushes.
The man who had run away earlier was subsequently arrested by the police in the vicinity of the Berbice Harbour Bridge, while searches have been launched for the other suspect.
