Georgetown: One day after being held for the brutal murder of his 24-year-old reputed wife in Berbice, Suraj Veersammy reportedly confessed on Monday.

The gruesome discovery was made by a man who was living a few feet away from where the barrel was found. The barrel was reportedly found in the trench opposite a cane harvester’s home.
Veersammy known as ‘Radesh’, a labourer of Hampshire Village, told police that he killed Devika ‘Vanessa’ Vickram because she wanted to end the relationship.
Based on information provided by a few persons, the woman who resided at the house was a “stay at home wife and her husband worked at the poultry outlet on the Corentyne”.
Reports indicate that the woman was a Venezuelan national born to Guyanese parents. Her body was found in a blue barrel in a trench at R and S Street, Belvedere, East Berbice Corentyne on April 11. There was also a sheet wrapped around her neck.
Police said she previously resided at lot 361 Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo. On the day of the murder, police said Veersammy reportedly showed up to his place of employment Saturday morning to uplift wages and left in a hurry. Police said “he was getting ready to flee the district”.
The body is currently at the Bailey’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem.
