Life imprisonment for man who raped, killed Mahaicony Businesswoman

Georgetown: A man who robbed and killed a businesswoman at Novar Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara October 2016 pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter and was sentenced to life imprisonment before before Justice Sandil Kissoon.

Dead: Nesha Shairoon called ‘Shakeela’

Devanand Rampersaud called ‘JuJu’, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after serving 25 years, for killing Bibi 56 year old businesswoman Nesha Shairoon called ‘Shakeela’ during a home invasion.

The 27-year-old admitted that between October 15 and 17, 2016 at Novar Mahaicony, he unlawfully killed Shairoon.

Rampersaud’s attorney, Keoma Griffith made a plea of mitigation and told the court that his client is the sole breadwinner of his family and takes care of his elderly grandmother.

The attorney said his client is remorseful, still young and can be rehabilitated.

However, State Prosecutor Abigail Gibbs urged the court to consider the way in which the elderly businesswoman was killed. Shairoon’s relatives, in the probation report, said they are still grieving.

Gibbs asked the court to send a strong message to the perpetrator and others who may want to commit similar offences.

Jailed: Devanand Rampersaud called ‘JuJu’,

Justice Kissoon considered the nature of the crime and Rampersaud’s claim that he was under the influence of cocaine when he committed the offence.

Additionally, based on the post mortem report, the woman was sexually assaulted. The businesswoman was discovered dead by her nephew with her hands and feet tied along with marks of violence about her body.
