A heavy police presence is expected in Port of Spain today as coup maker Imam Yasin Abu Bakr returns to court to face a murder charge. Abu Bakr and Brent "Big Brent" Miller are to appear before Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar today charged with the 1998 murder of Israel Sammy. At the last court session dozens of Jamaat al Muslimeen lined St Vincent Street in Port of Spain chanting Islamic prayers for Abu Bakr. Port of Spain police are expecting another large turnout today.
 

A total lockdown of the St Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) is scheduled for today. The West Indies Group of University Teachers (WIGUT) has promised no classes, no use of the library and a lockdown of all facilities in protest of what they term a disrespectful wage offer. UWI has offered the lecturers an one per cent salary increase over three years, WIGUT president Dr Godfrey Steele has said.

Thousands of sugar workers across the country today down tools at the troubled Guyana Sugar Corporation calling for a 15% increase in wages.
The strike was organized by the General Workers Union (GAWU).
According to a spokesperson attached to the Union, workers would get an increase every year in the month of October, but this did not happen this year.
Guysuco’s management wanted the workers to continue work while the union goes back to the board for further negotiations.

President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association Steve Ninval said it is disappointing to disclose to Guyanese that three of their countrymen who left to represent Guyana at the Commonwealth games in India have absconded to the United states of America.
 
The absconders are 21-year old Clevon Rock, 21-year old Dexter Jordan, and 24-year old  Devon Boatswain.

The Guyana Sugar Corporation this afternoon expressed its disappointment at the decision by workers represented by the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) to engage in an industry-wide strike, today Monday October 18, 2010.
 
GuySuco says the union has indicated that the strike action is aimed at applying pressure on the Corporation into making an across the board wages and salaries increase for 2010.
 

Police in  division ‘D’, West Demerara are investigating the circumstances which resulted in Rovin Maniram age 29 years sustaining a gunshot injury to his groin today Monday October 18, 2010.
 
Maniram of Novelle Flanders, West Bank Demerara lives in a yard where there are two houses and occupies the ground floor of the back house.
 
He was about to open his door when he allegedly saw a man who shot him and escaped.
 

Heavy rains have caused flooding and landslides in and around the capital city. But the Office of Disaster Preparedness (ODPM) says the situation is under control. The fire service is assisting with rescue missions from flooded areas while the Public Transport Service Commission (PTSC) is providing shuttle services around Port of Spain. The Meteorological Office says that no rain is expected later today until tomorrow morning.
