TrakkerNews was reliably informed on Tuesday that a number of private companies in Guyana are now in communication with overseas dealers to import plywood to supply the local market, after Barama was forced to shut down its operations recently. The commodity became scarce as the demand increased over recent weeks. At least two reputable hardware dealers have confirmed the move to supply the local market and are in the process of finalizing negotiations with overseas suppliers.

On November 4 the UNDP will officially launch it’s Global Human Development Report 2010 around the world, this being the 20th anniversary edition.  The 2010 Report looks back rigorously at the past four decades and identifies often surprising trends and patterns with important lessons for the future. According to a correspondence from the UN office here in Guyana, these varied pathways to human development show that there is no single formula for sustainable progress.

"Fast driving takes lives, careful driving saves lives". The theme of Road Safety month which started on Monday. The theme and observance of road safety comes in the wake of several fatal accidents on the roadways over the past 2 weeks, a total of 16 deaths. So far for the year the figure of road deaths stands at 117, 20 more than last year’s figure.

Today residents of Corentyne Berbice who are still recovering from the most deadliest smash up in their region, are calling for sleeping Policemen to be placed along the roadways. Speaking to reporters today the residents explained that more traffic patrols are needed to prevent the constant speeding by drivers particularly minibus operators. One resident explained that the nation need to speak out collectively since people continue to die like animals on the roadways. He said that people will continue to perish if immediate measures are not taken.

The five male pupils who were charged with the rape of a schoolmate have all returned to class.
The five pupils from form four and five returned to class today sparking outrage from some parents.
The school’s principal however has jumped to the defence of the boys saying they are innocent until proven guilty.
The boys in addition to a former pupil of the school are currently on$85,000 bail.
The boys were suspended from school.

More criticisms have been levelled at Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley today for statements he made on Saturday about Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar "over-reacting" to Fridays storm warnings.
Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism Winston Peters has slammed Rowley for his statements saying that Persad-Bissessar’s proactive move should have commended and not condemned.
