Cabinet has agreed that newly formed yellow cabs should receive exclusive access to contracts for the transport services. The announcement was made by Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon who said this move will encourage those in the taxi business to be formally regularized. Cars attached to taxi services have a January 01 deadline to have their vehicles painted yellow.

 

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and a delegation from this country are currently in Barbados attending the funeral of former Bajan PM David Thompson, who died of cancer late last month. Persad-Bissessar returns later today and Works Minister Jack Warner is acting as PM in her absence.

Acting Prime Minister Jack Warner says  any investment that this country makes should benefit its citizens. Warner made the statement in defence of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s statement that hurricane ravaged countries would receive aid but with stipulations. Warner said countries cannot be seeking friendship in bad times and be indifferent in times when things are good. 

Heavy winds and rain continue throughout the morning since a fierce front hit Guyana early this morning, flooding parts of Georgetown and coastal areas. Hydromet officers are convinced based on readings during the last 4 hours that this is the effect of Thunderstorm Tomas still raging in the Atlantic. The weather reading is that these conditions are likely to continue for most of the day into tomorrow with heavier winds expected.

A flood warning is in effect as people brace themselves for heavy flooding.
