Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), sole manufacturer of world renowned Demerara Rums has been awarded the prestigious Trophy for the best Caribbean and American Distiller by the International Wine and Spirit Competition body. 

The award was announced at an International Wine and Spirit Competition banquet held on November 17th,2010 at the City of London Guildhall, United Kingdom (UK). The trophy deems DDL the number one distiller in the Americas and the Caribbean sub category, which includes all of North, South and Central America as well as the Caribbean island nations

Guyana Association for Culture and Friendship with China headed by businessman Edward Boyer this evening hosted a meeting with a 20 man delegation out of China in an effort to strengthen cooperation and long term friendship between the two countries. The hour long meeting included members of the business community and executives of the Association. Among key issues raised is the proposal for both countries to engage on expertise in the food and mining sectors.

Over 220 persons will benefit from the $40M investment at Paradise on the East Coast of Demerara, where 52 families were allocated lots. 
Minister of Housing and Water Irfaan Ali said the allocation for many is an end to years of sacrifice that families have made while renting properties or sharing residences with other family members. Ali today at the Ministry’s 7th One-Stop-Shop said that the land allocation plan is a dynamic one that is so designed to match the economic environment in the country. 
 

LBI, East Coast Demerara – The Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc.(Guysuco), this afternoon said the company is disappointed and disheartened at the decision by the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) to have its members stage yet another industry-wide strike, commencing from today, until Thursday, November 25 2010. The Corporation views this move as a most callous and blatant disregard for the current state of the sugar industry.

Enmore, East Coast Demerara-

The police have launched an investigation in to the death of fisherman Ganesh Nabi of Bath settlement,West Coast Berbice.The police said Ganesh and his brother were consuming alcohol when an argument started and the 33 year old fisherman was stabbed to his neck with a broken bottle.

The suspect has been arrested and is in police custody.

Eccles, East Bank Demerara
Around 1:15 pm today three bandits one armed with a hand gun, forced their way into a home at Victoria street, Eccles on the East Bank of Demerara and took away a bag containing nine million dollars.
At the time of the robbery, a baby sitter, a home domestic and an eight month old baby was at home. According to one of the household the bandits gained entry through the back door of the home which was opened, attempted to strap the baby with the telephone cord and assaulted the two elderly women.

Today opposition leader Robert Corbin briefing the media said, Wednesday 10th November 2010, the Central Executive Committee of the PNCR, at a specially convened meeting, approved the final recommendations for the system and procedures for the nomination of a Presidential Candidate for the PNCR for the 2011 General and Regional Elections.
