Water levels dangerously high as flood warning remains in effect.

East Coast, Demerara –  Water levels along the East Coast on Sunday caused serious concerns for residents who are now fearful of flooding in their communities. The water is rising at an alarming level, at some areas overflowing it’s banks. This situation is expected to get worse with reports from the Hydromet office that the rains will continue throughout the week. The Government has deployed several excavators along the vulnerable areas on the East Coast, to clear the waterways of debris and other impediments that may result in clogged outfalls. With the constant rainfall, the drainage and irrigation department finds it difficult to keep the water at manageable levels. The faster they pump, the more it rains.

Flood warning remains in effect for communities in the low lying areas. Residents on the East Coast remain vigilant and are beginning to take precaution in the event of heavy flooding. While the situation on the eastern corridors seemed serious, the city council in Georgetown and Ministry of Public Works continue to clear drains in and around the city which so far has seen good results. In the past, a few heavy showers and the city becomes inundated.
