Early morning storm hits Guyana.

The power went off, as raging winds, lightning and thunder descended on Guyana at around 4 am Wednesday morning. The  storm which was expected over the weekend made landfall. Heavy winds uprooted trees, and house roofs along some parts on the east coast.

The power was restored within an hour, but the heavy winds continued into the morning and a white rain encapsulated the atmosphere. Vehicular traffic was forced to stop since it was almost impossible to see. The severe weather system north east of Guyana was predicted since Saturday last and declared a Tropical Storm the Hydrometeorological Service urged residents along the coast and inland areas to brace for heavy rainfall, gusty winds, thunder and lightning over the next few days. Reports were that Tropical storm Tomas had formed in the Atlantic threatening the Caribbean. The last 48 hours the storm changed direction from making landfall in Guyana and moved across Barbados. The sudden storm this morning is believed to be an effect from Tomas which is still moving in the Atlantic.
