TrakkerNews was reliably informed on Tuesday that a number of private companies in Guyana are now in communication with overseas dealers to import plywood to supply the local market, after Barama was forced to shut down its operations recently. The commodity became scarce as the demand increased over recent weeks. At least two reputable hardware dealers have confirmed the move to supply the local market and are in the process of finalizing negotiations with overseas suppliers. This move comes on the heels of President Jagdeo’s threat to pull Barama’s concessions after the wood manufacturing giant laid off 274 workers with the closure of it’s plywood operations. Barama was seeking to import as well and even thinking of restarting operations, when the President intervened. He requested an independent investigation into the operation of Barama since the timetable for resumption was unacceptable.
