Residents are being urged to stay off of beaches and remain alert as Tomas has now become a hurricane.
It is on its way to St Vincent and the Grenadines after wreaking havoc in Barbados last night and this morning. Roofs have been blown off and properties severely damaged as the hurricane pounded the island with winds in excess of 110 kilometres an hour.
The local Met office has kept the Tropical Storm warning in effect saying that the hurricane’s reach of more than 220 kilometres can still adversely affect Tobago and northern Trinidad. The hurricane is moving north but very slowly and is picking up strength, officials say.
The latest Met office bulletin says feeder band activity poses a serious threat for the remainder of Trinidad this afternoon.
