Tropical Storm Tomas, which is now approaching hurricane strength, is pounding Barbados at this time as it slowly heads west and north up the Caribbean chain. However the Met office says because of it slow movement and strong winds Trinidad and Tobago remains under a storm watch.
Residents are being urged to remain cautious although the night past without any signs or reports of severe weather. Tomas is now located about 30 kilometres south of Barbados moving west-northwest and is strengthening, the Met office says. Maximum sustained winds are near 110km/hr with higher gusts. the winds extend outwards up to 220 kilometres from the center.
In a statement issued this morning the Met office says: "Feeder band activity poses a serious threat for the remainder of Trinidad. Further, the slow westward movement of Tomas could bring the southernmost periphery of its cloud envelope over some areas of Trinidad. Tropical Storm Tomas therefore still poses a real and imminent threat as long as it remains in our island’s vicinity rotating, gathering strength."
