President Bharrat Jagdeo told Toshaos (Head of Amerindian Villages) that 8 Million US Dollars out of the 30 Million received from the Low Carbon Development Strategy’s payments from Norway will be available to Amerindian Villages.
The President was at the time addressing the Amerindian leaders this morning at the opening of the National Toshaos Council Meeting at the Guyana International Conference Centre.
President Jagdeo said that 4 million US dollars will be used to accelerate the demarcation process so that Amerindians can get titles for their lands and the other 4 million dollars will be used to fund activities that will be identified during the conference.
The President urged the Toshaos to make their own decisions and not allow members of the World Bank who will be at the conference to dictate how the money must be spent.
He lashed out at the World Bank claiming of the delay tactics used to release the money to Guyana since January.
January 2010 Norway agreed to pay Guyana 250 Million US dollars over a five year period as carbon credits for Guyana’s Forest, an initiative by the Guyanese President.
