Guysuco maintains that it cannot meet the union’s demand for an increase in wages and salaries – Latest position

Guysuco’s position up to mid-morning Thursday was unmoved by GAWU’s demand for an increase in wages and salaries for 2010. When contacted today GAWU officials were locked in a meeting, but TrakkerNews was told by The NIS officer that workers of the LBI sugar estate have resumed duties, but the turnout is below average. Berbice workers are also on a go slow, as some are still holding strong on their demands.

Early in the week almost 800 sugar workers countrywide went on strike, pending a discussion with Guysuco and the Union. So far Guysuco has maintained it’s position that any reasonable offer for wages and salaries increases for 2010 must be contingent on the industry at least achieving the revised target of 264,000 tonnes of sugar. The Corporation is even calling on the Union to make the sugar workers understand the reality of the current crisis facing the industry.

Guysuco is willing to have the Union verify it’s audited financial statements to verify the position that renders the industry unable to meet the demands.
