Just after 15:00 hrs. on Thursday sections of Water street became inundated following an exceptional high tide, with water rising above the wall. Some businesses were affected, others forced to close their doors early. Ever so often Water Street is affected because the particular stretch between Muneshwar and the Mollases Plant, Kingston which is quite low. A high reading of 3.16 meters around 15:45 hrs. was the forecast today according to the local Hydromet office. The weather readings suggested, above normal high tide throughout the weekend into the new week.
Georgetown for years has been affected by these unusual spring tides, with it’s geographical position below sea level, the Capital city often brace itself for heavy floods. The rising sea level means more worry for the city folks, particularly businesses in the low land areas. The rest of the country is even more vulnerable, particularly along the East Coast which has seen the worst floods in the past decade. The current weather readings are cause for concern.
