Antigua Antigua

Antigua

The hill and cove-enhanced isle of Antigua claims 365 beaches, one for each day of the year. St John’s is the Capital City of the twin administered Antigua & Barbuda which was a thriving seaport in the 17th century. The most imposing and historic building in the capital is the Cathedral of St John the Divine. The church was elevated to cathedral status in 1848, thereby making St Johns officially a city in the British Empire. A museum nearby displays artifacts of the 18th and 19th centuries when sugar plantations brought great wealth as the "petroleum" of that time's economy.

Just outside St Johns is Fort James, named in honour of King James II of England and over-seas domains, including Antigua and Barbuda. The Admiral's House displays memorabilia from Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson's time spent in Antigua and the area. English Harbour, viewed from Shirley Heights, is said to be drop-dead gorgeous.

Ringed by innumerable coves and white sand beaches, with low hills toward the south, Antigua is 15 miles wide and 12 miles at its longest point. The land is about 108 square miles with its highest point is 1,360 ft. above sea level. Barbuda, is a low-lying beach-fringed coral island 32 miles to the north of Antigua. Barbuda boast 62 square miles of land space. Average annual temperature 80. Average annual humidity 70%. Average annual rainfall 35 inches. The official language is English.
