Rtd Justice James Patterson to be unilaterally sworn in as GECOM chair

Retired Justice James Patterson
Georgetown: Former High Court judge and advisor to the Attorney General Justice James Patterson have been chosen by President David Granger to be the next GECOM chairman.

This was after President Granger and the Leader of the Opposition Bharrat Jagdeo had met Thursday to discuss the matter. However, Patterson’s name was not included in the third and final list which was submitted by Opposition Leader, as such Jagdeo plans to challenge the legality of the decision in the courts.

Patterson chaired the Commission of Inquiry into last year’s prison fire that killed 17 prisoners.

Article 161 (2) of the Constitution states that, “The Chairman of the Elections Commission shall be a person who holds or who has held office as a judge of a court having unlimited jurisdiction in civil and criminal matters in some part of the Commonwealth, or a court having jurisdictions in appeals from any such court or who is qualified to be appointed as any such judge, or any other fit person…”
The criteria have been under much debate for the year whether the President was correct in his interpretation.
