Cabinet approves attendance for 5th ACP Meeting

Georgfetown : Minister of State Joseph Harmon  announced Cabinet’s approval for Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder to attend the Fifth African, Caribbean and the Pacific (ACP) Meeting, which will be held in Nassau, the Bahamas from September 20 to 21.

The announcement was made at a post-Cabinet briefing at the National Communication Network (NCN), Homestretch Avenue.

The Bahamas will be hosting 40 international delegates who will meet for consensus on policy and strategic options for marine resources, in the development of a five-year action plan for member states. The meeting will provide ministers with responsibility for fisheries and aquaculture an opportunity for networking to enhance partnership for the development of these sectors.

 

Minister Harmon explained that the meeting will also enable Guyana to access resources and take advantage of opportunities offered by agencies through the ‘Blue Economy’ in which the environmental risks and ecological damage from economic activities are mitigated or significantly reduced.

 

The Minister also revealed that Cabinet approval was granted for Superintendent Sheron James and Lance Corporal Fizal Harry of the Guyana Police Force to attend a training course in Illicit Economy and Financial Flows investigation, organised by the Guardia di Finanza Italy which will be held in Rome, Italy from October 2 to 13.

 

Minister Harmon noted the topics to be discussed among the participants will be fighting corruption, transnational dimension of organised crime and the transnational investigations.

 

The Guardia di Finanza primary goal is to protect the legal economy and the businesses operating in compliance with the law, while ensuring that the Republic (Italy), the European Union, the regions, and the local governments can rely on a regular inflow and appropriate use of the resources meant for the community, and for supporting policies for economic and social revival and development.

 

Permission was also given to Civil Defence Commission (CDC) Planning and Training assistant Allana Walters to attend a comprehensive disaster management training programme to be held in Japan from August 14 to September 23.

 

The training will provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the importance of community-based disaster risk reduction for natural disasters and the role of national and local government in promoting Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
